About this event

Discover Seamus Heaney’s work through the four elements that shaped his imagination. In this series of themed talks, we trace how earth, air, water, and fire become guiding forces in Heaney’s poetry—sources of memory, inspiration, and meaning.

For the third event of the series, take a journey with us from the intimate warmth of the fire at the heart of Mossbawn, through the forge of craft and creativity, and to the wider store of cultural memory.

This tour will explore how the element of fire was used as a symbol of love, creativity, and the Irish identity in Seamus Heaney's poetry. It shows how the flame of creativity can become an enduring test of resilience, imagination, and belonging.

He captured the moment when everyday labour ignites inspiration in The Forge, where he writes 'An unpredictable fantail of sparks.'
