About this event

Exploring Ireland’s LGBTQIA+ past and present, this tour brings Irish queer histories to light through the lens of Ireland's emigrants.

As with many modern countries, equality did not come to Ireland until relatively recently. It was only in 1993 that homosexuality was finally decriminalised via referendum, and marriage equality would not come for another 20+ years in 2015. However, the LGBTQ+ community has always existed and had a strong identity, despite the Catholic country Ireland is. The diaspora members have had a huge impact across the globe, from Oscar Wilde with his genre-defining work, to Katherine Zappone and Ann Louise Gilligan, who campaigned tirelessly to have the same rights as straight individuals.

This tour aims to shed a light on how queer people have been trailblazers, long before their sexuality was recognised, or legal.
