Post-WW1, Copenhagen: factory machinist Karoline (Vic Carmen Sonne) struggles to survive as she cannot prove that her missing soldier husband is dead.

She embarks on a passionate affair with factory owner Jørgen (Joachim Fjelstrup) and falls pregnant.
