  • William Orpen / Abbas Akhavan Walking Tour

Free Events

Join National Gallery of Ireland curator Donal Maguire and Rachel McIntyre, Assistant Curator of Learning and Engagement at the Douglas Hyde Gallery, for this illuminating look at how trauma and war have been reflected through art in some of the most evocative pieces you can currently see in Ireland.

Aftermath: The War Landscapes of William Orpen at the National Gallery, and variations on a garden by Abbas Akhavan both depict on scenes of struggle and consequence, the former drawing on the trauma of World War I and the latter using close-to-home scenes such as the garden to evoke the confusion of war when it comes knocking at the door.

You'll begin your tour in the National Gallery where Maguire will explain Orpen's works, taking in as a bonus the new commission by artist Garret Phelan, I HAVE NO RIGHT TO BE SO NEAR, before setting off for the Douglas Hyde Gallery. There, you'll be treated to an in-depth talk on Akhavan's sculptures, video and photographic installations.

It's a unique tour that art lovers simply shouldn't miss the chance to be a part of.
