Wicked

Wicked is a very entertaining companion piece to The Wizard of Oz; telling the story of Oz from the Wicked Witch of the West’s perspective, it humanises the woman who is so harshly depicted in Frank Baum’s book and the film that followed.

Wicked is a tale of friendship between two university students (studying sorcery, no less), named Glinda and Elphaba. A fateful meeting with the Wizard of Oz drives a wedge between them, and while manipulative Glinda grips on to power and popularity, Elphaba stays true to herself.

And so you see the story of the Wicked Witch from a new perspective. You see the mislabelled victim of prejudice, the loving friend, and the moralistic animal lover…and you get to hear some incredible songs too, like Defying Gravity and Popular.

Wicked is one of the best modern musicals out there; thoughtful, smart, well-written and with bombastic tunes, it has everything you could ever want from a show. Travel the road to Oz via the Bord Gáis Energy Theatre if that sounds like your kind of entertainment.
