Whiskey Island - Trail through Ireland's Ancient East

Tour starts outside the Celtic Whiskey Shop on Dawson Street.

Day one of the overnight tour takes guests to Cork, Ireland’s largest county. The first stop along the way is Royal Oak, a majestic 18th century estate, handpicked by Bernard and Rosemary Walsh to be the home of Walsh Whiskey Distillery. The guided tour here is the perfect beginning to the whiskey journey. Get a behind the scenes look at how Irish whiskey is made and afterwards try one of their award winning whiskeys, The Irishman Founder’s Reserve or Writers’ Tears Copper Pot.

Then a short drive to Kilkenny, which is a medieval city in southeast Ireland, arguably the most prominent medieval city in the country. Guests can explore at leisure for two hours, with plenty of choices for lunch. The grand Kilkenny Castle was built in 1195 by Norman occupiers and overlooks the town, why not take a visit while you’re here.

The visit to Kilkenny City includes Ballykeefe Distillery, an artisan Irish family farm distillery. It is from this area that the first written account of distilling in Ireland comes from in 1324. Discover the history of Irish whiskey at its birthplace. The tour involves being walked through the farm’s mill house, to the brewhouse, to the copper pot stills and to the warehouse where the whiskey is still sleeping soundly. On site bottling plant can also be seen and the tour ends in the tasting rooms, transformed from the horse's stable where samples of Ballykeefe’s own Gin, Vodka and Poitin can be tasted.

Enjoy an evening of leisure and a night at a 5 star hotel in Cork with breakfast included. The tour then heads to the Jameson Distillery Midleton. John Jameson made his world famous whiskey in Dublin for 200 years but since 1975, Jameson has been produced down in Midleton, East Cork.

Discover the home of one of the most successful Irish whiskeys in the world. The tour is finished with a comparison tasting in the bar and a complimentary drink. There is also plenty of time for shopping on the tour. Travel seamlessly along the Cork to Dublin highway, stopping in Cashel, a wonderful little Irish town in County Tipperary. Enjoy plenty of choices for lunch there.

The last stop on the tour is the home of Tullamore D.E.W., a whiskey that much like Jameson, has enjoyed enormous success on a worldwide scale. Take the Whiskey Wise Masterclass here and discover untold secrets along the path of legendary founder Daniel E. Williams and the whiskey making process he perfected. The tour concludes with exclusive access to the D.E. Williams branch house, part bar, part grocery. This space was inspired by a chain of one stop shops that thrived across the midlands 100 years ago.
