The Snapper

Roddy Doyle’s The Snapper, from his Barrytown Trilogy, is getting a new lease of life at the Gate Theatre as it is adapted for the stage.

Barrytown was Roddy’s fictional community of the north side of Dublin. In writing about it, he focused in on ordinary families, each with their own challenges and quirks, and depicted them with a salty honesty.

In The Snapper, 20 year old Sharon Rabbite is pregnant and she won’t tell anyone who the father is. However, the truth always is always disclosed, and what emerges is a sweet and funny story of how one girl overcomes the embarrassment of an ill-fated night of drunkenness and how a dysfunctional yet loving family comes together to protect one of their own.

Twitching curtains and idle gossip may define Barrytown, but equally, this work is a study of family in Dublin’s tight and loving communities.
