Theatre, Stage & Film

Sunset Boulevard is a musical with music by Andrew Lloyd Webber based on Billy Wilder’s 1950 film about Norma Desmond, a washed up remnant of the silent film era. Her beauty and star has faded, and she is a tragic shadow of her former self.

However, a young screenwriter by the name of Joe Gillis wanders into Norma’s life, setting off a sequence of events that culminate in pure insanity.

The musical is illuminating on what the golden age of Hollywood was like, with its studio system and star-strewn hierarchy. The drama flows thick and fast, studded with bona fide show tunes such as The Lady’s Paying and Too Much In Love to Care.

Sunset Boulevard is such a classic that it’s attracted some of the biggest stars of stage and screen such as Glenn Close, Petula Clarke, Hugh Jackman and Michael Ball. Dark and utterly glamorous, it’s the perfect musical for a grown-up audience.

See the silver screen on the stage at the Bord Gaís Energy Theatre. Norma Desmond, as played by stage legend Ria Jones, is ready for her close-up, Mr DeMille.
