Theatre, Stage & Film

Frank McGuinness’ seminal play, Someone Who’ll Watch Over Me, was an instant hit on both the West End and on Broadway when it was first staged in the early 1990s. Due to its initial success, it has been subject to numerous revivals in the years since.

Someone Who’ll Watch Over Me was inspired by the travails of Northern Irish writer and teacher Brian Keenan who was abducted in Beirut in 1986 and held captive for four and a half years. McGuinness’ dramatic retelling features three hostages – an Irish man, an English man, and an American man – as they try to survive in captivity.

With its Beckett-influenced dialogue, Someone Who’ll Watch Over Me is recognised as both a modern Irish classic and a tribute to the resilience and defiance of the human spirit.
