Continental Drift is a concert of two large-scale orchestral works that has been rescheduled after New Music Dublin 2018 had to be cancelled in March of this year due to extreme weather conditions.

The two pieces are by composers with very different backgrounds, and featuring extremely different solo instruments.

Unsuk Chin is a Berlin-based composer from Korea originally. She will be presenting Šu, a work for orchestra that features Wu Wei as the soloist on the sheng. The sheng is ancient traditional wind instrument originally from China that is capable of polyphony and has been enjoying a popular renaissance in recent years.

Meanwhile, Irish post-minimalist composer Kevin Volans, himself originally from South Africa, will premiere Gol Na mBan San Ár. This is another orchestral piece, but one which features the uilleann pipes, played by soloist David Power, as its featured instrument.

This concert will draw parallels between how contemporary orchestral music interacts with folk traditions and instruments from different parts of the globe with two exciting pieces from celebrated composers like Volans and Chin.
