Midsummer (A Play with Songs)

David Greig and Gordon McIntyre’s Midsummer (a play with songs) makes its Dublin debut at Project Arts Centre this May.

From the team that brought you the smash hit This Lime Tree Bower in 2016, comes the Dublin debut of this "warm-hearted, beautifully-sculpted musical romantic comedy" (The Scotsman) at Project Arts Centre, opening May 23 2019.

A contemporary riff on Shakespeare’s A Midsummer Night’s Dream, Midsummer (A Play with songs) charts the fluctuations in a relationship between two unique lovers in their mid-30s; Bob, a small-time crook who once aspired to rock stardom, and Helena, a divorce lawyer, who is having an affair with a married man.

Punctuated by wistful, wry songs full of geographical co-ordinates and maps of the heart, it is emotionally underpinned by the thrilling possibility that we can take our own lives in hand and reinvent ourselves. Midsummer is a streetwise romcom that turns a midlife crisis into a dance of freedom, and proves that it’s never too late for any of us to change.

Starring Roseanna Purcell as Helena and Aidan Crowe as Bob, these two performers take the audience on a theatrical and musical tour through the streets of Edinburgh for a great lost weekend of bridge-burning, car chases, wedding bust-ups, bondage miscalculations, midnight trysts and self-loathing hangovers.
