About this event

Writer Seamus Heaney is renowned for his poetry about nature, but did you know that he also supported environmental causes?

In this talk, writer and scholar Dr Yvonne Reddick shows us how Heaney used his famous bog-poems to raise funds for Irish bog conservation, opposed a new motorway that would cut through an unspoiled wetland in Derry, and even reviewed an entire environmental management plan for Lough Beg.

His later poetry takes a searching look at climate change, one of the most urgent issues of our time. Heaney was a generous supporter of libraries, museums and education – but documents in the National Library of Ireland also reveal his commitment to environmental organisations.
