2009 marks the centenary of Francis Bacon, the greatest figuartive artist of the 20th Century . No visit to Dublin is complete without a visit to Bacon's Studio in Dublin City Gallery The Hugh Lane. This extraordinary space which was transferred from 7 Reece Mews, Kensington, London in 2001 was listed as one of only three Irish artworks in the The Guardian's recent "100 Artworks To See Before You Die" (another one of these artworks is The Eve of Saint Agnes by Harry Clarke which is also on permanent display in the Hugh Lane). The Gallery will celebrate the work of this famous Irish-born artist with a year long series of exhibitions culminating in "from ritual to Romance" a gallery wide exhibition of works and studio items by Francis Bacon, as well as a selection of work by William de Kooning,. This exhibition opens on 28th October, the birthday of Francis Bacon.
