  • Spring Into Heritage: James Joyce Tower and Museum

Free Events

The Spring Into Heritage festival will have you eager to spring over to the James Joyce Tower and Museum as the Dún Laoghaire/Rathdown area celebrates its historical heritage with free tours around the iconic Martello tower.

Enjoy thrilling views over Sandycove Beach as one of the festival volunteers regales you with tales of how and why the Martello towers on Dublin's coastline were built, and just how this particular structure came to be so irretrievably associated with James Joyce, who spent six nights there in 1904.

Joyces' friend, Oliver St John Gogarty, had leased the former battery and defence structure from the British War Office and claimed that there had been a midnight occurance involving a loaded revolver which had led to Joyce's abrupt departure.

If you have read Ulysses, you probably recognise that scenario from the opener - if not, you probably still want to know more... get the gossip you crave and view ephemera associated with Joyce as well as his own possessions in this tower, which has been restored to how it would have been in 1904.

Book and history devotees, step into your very own literary time warp at the James Joyce Tower and Museum as part of the wonderful Spring Into Heritage festival.
