  • Catriona Dunnett: Mass Paths

Free Events

Through harnessing digital technologies, Catriona Dunnett creates a rustic aesthetic in her discussion of Ireland during the time of the Penal Laws.

In 1695 the Penal Laws were introduced in Ireland, placing limits on the rights of Catholics. Mass gathered at rocks, in fields, church ruins, or in graveyards as public practice was outlawed. The countryside was criss-crossed by desire-paths to these clandestine locations- mass paths.

Catriona went back to photograph these faded paths, turning them into tea-toned cyanotypes, crafted from the digital negatives.

Looking at these earthy images, you'll get a real feeling for the risks that Catholics undertook by continuing to practice their religion during such oppressive times.
