ISAF Youth Sailing World Championship

Location: Dun Laoghaire / Dublin Bay

The Four Star Pizza ISAF (International Sailing Federation) Youth World Sailing Championship 2012, a premium world sailing event, is coming to Ireland for the for the first time and will take place in Dublin Bay from Thursday 12th – Saturday 21st July.  350 sailors aged 16 – 19 years of age from 63 nations representing six continents will sail in the Championship. 250 boats (including Laser Radials, 420’s, RS:X’s and 29ers) will be raced by these sailors during the event and the sailors will be accompanied by 150 coaches. It is expected that 10 Irish sailors will qualify to take part in the Championship.

The ISAF Youth Sailing World Championship was first held in Sweden in 1971, has taken place every year since. The last three Championships were held in Brazil, Turkey and Croatia respectively. Throughout its history, the ISAF Youth Worlds has visited over 20 nations, covering every continent, and over 100 different nations have competed. Fifteen of the sailors who won medals at the Beijing 2008 Olympic Games are past medalists at the ISAF Youth Sailing World Championship. France is currently the most successful nation, winning the ISAF Nations Trophy on a record 10 occasions and holding a record 62 medals: 20 Gold, 27 Silver and 15 Bronze.

A public festival of events and free entertainment will be happening all along the waterfront to celebrate Dun Laoghaire hosting the Four Star Pizza ISAF Youth Worlds

The ISAF Youth Worlds Organisers are thrilled to share the very exciting DLRCC Entertainment Guide and we can assure you that if you come to Dun Laoghaire during the Youth Worlds, especially over the weekend of Friday 13th – Sunday 15th July, you won’t be disappointed.

-‘Try Sailing’ experience from Carlisle Pier
-Marine Scientific Exhibition on the East Pier

On the Friday there are ‘Try Sailing’ sessions on offer from the INSS at very reasonable rates and after some time on the Bay, you can visit the Four Star Pizza Festival Outlets (which will be open across the weekend) for some ‘nosh’ and savour the atmosphere of the Youth Worlds Opening Ceremony (more details here).

Saturday’s programme will be packed with Jazz Performances, Street Entertainers, a performance by a street bike freestyle rider, a market, more opportunities to ‘Try Sailing’ and opportunities to take a power boat trip.

On Sunday as a special treat with some real intrigue and lots of fun challenges, you and your children are invited to take park in a Nautical Treasure Hunt. A Festival Ceili in the Harbour Plaza might also take your fancy or a stroll through the Festival Market along the Metals and the Co Co Market in the People’s Park.

Opening and Closing Ceremony
The opening ceremony of the 42nd ISAF Youth Worlds will take place on the Dún Laoghaire Harbour Plaza (at the bottom or Marine Road) at half past seven on the evening of Friday 13th July. The opening ceremony will feature Olympic style Parade of Nations marching from the Royal Marine Hotel to the Plaza, led by Celtic Drummers, Extreme Rhythm

The mixing of the waters ceremony and raising of the flag ceremony will mark the official opening of the Four Star Pizza ISAF Youth Worlds.

The seating area in front of the stage is reserved for participants and guests, but the general public will have a great view of the ceremony from the open viewing areas adjoining the Harbour Plaza.

And this is all on offer on top of the opportunity to see 63 nations and future sailing stars and Olympians battle it out on Dublin Bay during the biggest international sailing event that Ireland has ever hosted, vying for the ultimate prize of a Youth Sailing World Championship title.
