Schubert Die Schöne Müllerin, Op. 25 (D 795)
One of the most ambitious classical music projects Ireland has ever seen Schubertreise will take the listener on an exciting journey through six hundred songs: thirty five recitals at the rate of four a year. It has become commonplace in recent years to hear of complete performances of the Beethoven piano sonatas, the Bach cantatas or the Haydn symphonies, but most of Schubert’s extraordinary songs are never performed. Starting in February 2013 with Die Schöne Müllerin, the series will closely follow the Bärenreiter edition. Dubliner Conor Biggs and Flemish pianist Michel Stas have already embarked on this long journey in Belgium and are keen to share these unjustly neglected masterpieces with the Irish public in the intimate setting of the Kevin Barry Room.
Die Schöne Müllerin, is the first of Schubert’s great song cycles, is the heart-breaking story of a young man’s rejected love and contains some of the composer’s best loved songs.
