To the delight of the global hip-hop community LA’s renowned hip-hop collective JURASSIC 5 reformed after a long hiatus for last year’s Coachella Festival with the original line-up of Cut Chemist, Nu-Mark, Chali 2na, Akil, Zaakir and Mark 7even and they proceeded to tear it up in the blazing desert sun. In their review, the Los Angeles Times noted that “Jurassic 5 provided a critical reminder of how durable hip-hop can be when done correctly.”
Now Jurassic 5 are returning to Europe to remind you how it’s done.
In the mid-90s J5 picked up the mantel of intelligent, funky, positive-thought hip-hop from the preceding Native Tongues movement spearheaded by De La Soul and A Tribe Called Quest. A debut EP featuring the stone-cold street classic Concrete Schoolyard and new style of playful and retro-infused turntablism and harmonising pass-the-mic rapping instantly became a cult classic.
The subsequent LPs – 2000′s Quality Control, 2002′s Power In Numbers and their last album 2006′s Feedback – helped J5 reach an audience way beyond the confines of hip-hop culture to spread the magic to a broader global audience.
