The ‘Summer of Heritage’ programme will run throughout the summer, from 27th June until Sunday 2nd of September 2012.
This is the fifth year of this programme which has attracted thousands of visitors to many of the top heritage sites in the county. This year the programme has again been expanded and comprises a range of events for adults and children alike, all of which are free to the public.
The highlight of this year’s programme are the tours planned for the Seapoint Martello tower, a stunningly restored example of these 19th century defensive forts, built during the Napoleonic wars, and the tours of the stunning Celtic Oratory in Dún Laoghaire. This summer also sees Kill Abbey feature for the first time, Kill Abbey being one of the oldest churches in Dublin, dating back to the 10th century. This year for the first time, there will also be a walking tour of old Dundrum, taking in the Castle and St. Nahi’s church. A walking tour along ‘The Metals’, a historic pathway that linked the quarry in Dalkey to the harbour in Dún Laoghaire, has been included again after its popularity last year, as has Carrickbrennan graveyard, the resting place of many sailors lost in maritime disasters since the 17th century. Also included again is the Dún Laoghaire Memorials Tour, which is a coastal visit to the numerous memorials around the town, including the Queen Victoria Fountain and the Crimean War Cannon. There will also be tours of the Obelisk in Stillorgan, and Deansgrange Cemetry. All of the tours will be conducted by qualified guides.
Tours will again take place at one of Dublin’s most magnificent stately homes, Cabinteely House, located in Cabinteely Park, and location for the filming of 2012 Oscar-nominated Albert Nobbs. These tours will also include living history performances from professional actors in period costumes and feature many of the colourful characters the house’s history.
Tours taking place throughout 27 June - 02 September 2012 on Wednesdays, Saturdays and Sundays. All tours are Free.
