Tonight we celebrate the Christmas season with baroque music from Germany, Italy and France. Our program features four relatively substantial pieces with a few shorter chorales and motets in between.
We begin in Leipzig (in 1714) with an Advent cantata and chorale by Bach. We then move north to Lübeck for two cantatas by Bach’s mentor, Dietrich Buxtehude: a short but swinging rendition of 'In dulce Jiubilo' and his stirring meditation on the birth of Christ: 'Das neugeborne Kindelein'.
In the second part of the concert, the Irish Baroque Orchestra transports us to Italy with Corelli’s deservedly popular ‘concerto made for the night of Christmas’. The National Chamber Choir then lift us back over the Alps to France for two a cappella motets by Jean Mouton, and we conclude ‘tutti’ with the delicious melodies of Charpentier’s Christmas cantata.
