Enter the magical musical world of Cats La Traviatahttp://www.visitdublin.com/event/La_Traviata_at_Gaiety_TheatreClaudia Boyle stars in this tribute to Verdi on his 200th Anniversary Lyric Opera returns to the Gaiety Theatre this Summer, with Verdi’s much loved La Traviata on June 5th, 7th & 8th 2013. It is performed by an Irish and international cast – headed by Claudia Boyle, opera’s newest star and recent winner of the International Maria Callas Award. She is supported by exciting Italian Tenor Luigi Boccia and acclaimed English baritone George Mosley, as well as Irish artists Deirdre Masterson, Cormac Lawlor, Ciaran Judge and Stephen Fennelly, among others. The RTE Concert Orchestra accompany, conducted by David Angus. La Traviata tells the story of how Violetta, the beautiful but fragile social butterfly, sacrifices her one hope of personal happiness for the sake of her lover’s reputation. A tragic and resonant tale of society and morality, it combines compelling characters with hugely powerful, moving and instantly recognisable melodies, making it one of the most emotionally engaging and popular operas of all time. Vivian Coates directs this sparkling revival, which sees Claudia return to the role she sang to great acclaim in Dublin in 2010. Once again, the Lyric Opera Chorus comprises largely of Irish students from the Royal Irish Academy of Music and the DIT Conservatory of Music & Drama – the next generation of opera singers at the first stage of their careers. 2013 is a very special year for Verdi lovers – the 200th anniversary of his birth. One of opera’s most important composers, he contributed much to the modern repertoire with many of his operas firm favourites in the opera house today. La Traviata is one of his finest – the magnificent score includes such favourites as Violetta’s introspective ‘Ah fors’è lui’; the duet ‘Pura siccome un angelo’ and the haunting strains of ‘Parigi, o cara’, in which the lovers poignantly imagine a life that will never be theirs. The role of Violetta (the ‘fallen woman’ of the title) is one of Verdi’s most complex characters – a role sung by Claudia with dramatic intensity and great sensitivity. Irish audiences now have a chance to enjoy this unique artist as she emerges as one of opera’s great global talents. La Traviata – a wonder for those new to opera, and a joy for opera lovers.
