Songspiel was set up in 2004 by Helena Walsh, Paul Keenan and Ruth McGill. ‘Songspiel’ is an invented word coined by Bertolt Brecht and Kurt Weill to describe a new art form based on dramatic expression through song. Their third Cabaret, ‘SONGSPIEL: STILL UNPLUGGED’ moves from solos to duets and trios by Stephen Sondheim, William Bolcom, Manuel de Falla, Jacques Brel, Hans Eisler and Tom Waits, amongst others; languages include Irish, Croatian, French, Spanish, German and Italian as well as English. The group promises an evening of musical stories which reflect the variety of moods and emotions of living. We attempt to re-find the original idea of Cabaret as a non-thematic evening of diverse performance (and performance styles). Words form the foundation of our repertoire, from poets and anonymous folksong writers to some of the greatest contemporary songwriters. The title speaks of Songspiel’s commitment to intimate, un-amplified voices.
