Shakespeare in Music

On the Abbey stage

Ireland’s national theatre and national orchestra join forces for two performances at the Abbey Theatre celebrating the works of William Shakespeare with words and music.

Shakespeare in Music presents the RTÉ National Symphony Orchestra, conducted by Gavin Maloney, performing excerpts from orchestral works by composers including Sibelius, Prokofiev, Berlioz and Mendelssohn. Actors will recite some well-known monologues from plays that inspired this music such as Romeo and Juliet, King Lear, The Tempest and A Midsummer Night’s Dream among others.

The works of William Shakespeare have been brought to life on the Abbey stage since King Lear was first performed in 1928. Shakespeare in Music brings together Shakespeare’s words and the music which they inspired.
