Landmarks of Emotion
Two mesmeric landmarks of the orchestral repertoire eloquently illustrate the enormous variety and vitality of the form. Dvorák’s glorious late-19th-century Concerto is a haunting blend of American-Negro folk tunes and thrilling, heart-on-sleeve writing for the cello (played by the remarkable, always unmissable, Alban Gerhardt). Completed in 1936, Rachmaninov’s Third Symphony is a work of large emotions underpinned by the brittle poignancy of plain-chant and expressed in music that moves from brooding melancholia to searing lyricism to thrilling defiance with irresistible energy.
