SCHOENBERG Variations on a Recitative, Op. 40 [9’]
LISZT Fantasy and Fugue on the Chorale Ad nos, ad salutarem undam, S259 [28’]
Two aspects of the evening’s Main Season concert are amplified in this preceding Pipeworks event. Berg’s concerto and his teacher Schoenberg’s variations are twelve-tone works, both with a strong tonal undercurrent. Berg’s use of the chorale Es ist genug in the Concerto and Beethoven’s famous hymn of joy are mirrored in Liszt’s use of the revolutionary hymn Ad nos from Meyerbeer’s opera Le Prophète
