'AFTERPLAY’ by Brian Friel and
'DESIRE, DESIRE, DESIRE' by Christopher Durang
'Afterplay' is beautifully and tenderly written and significantly adds to the Friel/Chekhov canon. Sonya and Prozorov are now middle-aged but, despite all they have experienced, have kept almost all their youthful characteristics. Sonya is still hard-working and hopelessly in love, trying to save what can be saved from the family estate in new and unkind times. Prozorov remains the indecisive boy who wants to please everybody and always fails. Strong acting and positive direction make this a fascinating piece of theatre from Balally Players. Their second offering, 'Desire, Desire, Desire' by Christopher Durang, is to Tenessee Williams what Shakespeare in Love is to the Bard, but in 20 minutes. It has references to as many plays by Williams and a legion of others as you can count. But it works perfectly on its own merits, and is a lively and entertaining piece of theatre, a fine piece of excellent storytelling.
