Trinity College is entitled to a free copy of every book published in either Ireland or the United Kingdom so there are nearly 4½ million books held in the various libraries both on and off campus. To the right of the Old Library is a more modern library building, the Berkeley Library, dating from 1967. It was named after philosopher and historian, Bishop George Berkeley (1685 – 1753) who was both a student and a teacher at Trinity. Berkeley Campus of the University of California and the adjoining city is named after him.
