Monkstown Castle

The ruins of this 16th century castle consist of the gate tower and a residential block, connected by a section of the bawn wall. The original castle was constructed during the 12th century by the Cistercian Order of monks from St Mary’s Abbey in Dublin. They established a farm at Monkstown stretching as far as Bullock Harbour and built castles at Monkstown and Bullock
Harbour to protect their lands and fisheries.
