The Millennium Bridge is one of Dublin's newer river bridges and was opened on 20 December 1999 thus beating its deadline by a full 11 days! Solely a pedestrian bridge, its purpose was to open a new route between Temple Bar and the Mary Street/Jervis Street shopping district and to relieve congestion on the nearby Halfpenny Bridge.
