In 1993, when digging out the foundations for the new apartment block above, the archaeologists found the substantial lower sections of this massive tower. The walls are 4m thick and the tower rose to a height of three storeys. This tower had to be strong as it would be the first part of the defences to face a determined sea-borne attack.
The foundations of the city wall can be seen continuing from two sides of the tower and it is believed that virtually all of foundations from the complete circuit of the walls still exist underground. Indeed some sections of old wall also exist above ground.
On darker days it may be difficult to see down to the level of the old tower but there is a conservation plan being prepared to upgrade the presentation of the tower which will include lighting, pictorial descriptions of its history and ongoing maintenance and cleaning.
